Brighton started off as a little Saxon settlement. The Saxons arrived in Sussex in the fifth century AD and established the kingdom of Sussex, which included the hamlet of Brighton. It was once known as Beorthelm's tun (Beorthelm's farm or village). It subsequently developed into the city of Brighton.
