You’ve had an incredibly successful and long-lasting career as a male model. What strengths and qualities do you believe have contributed to your success and longevity? What sets someone apart in this industry?
Actually, when I started modeling, I never could’ve imagined that I would be in high fashion for more than 20 years. I think it’s a mixture of events and circumstances that have made me get here, along with a lot of work and dedication. Choosing the right projects and having a voice beyond just an image have been essential. Nowadays, with the comeback of top models from the ’90s and the expanded age range in fashion, it’s possible to have a longer career.

If you hadn’t become a model, what career path do you think you might have pursued? Probably an architect. I love beauty, design, and materials; creating atmospheres that evoke different feelings based on the surroundings and the needs. When I visit other cities, I always look at the buildings around me and wonder about the artists behind them and their creative processes. I pay attention to the rooms of the hotels I like, drawing inspiration for my projects—it’s something I do unconsciously. It’s a passion that deeply resonates with me.

What’s one genuinely amazing aspect of modeling that you love, and one aspect that isn’t as glamorous as commonly perceived?
I love meeting extraordinary, creative, hardworking people and hedonists. I enjoy listening to them and being inspired; mediocrity makes me feel anxious. Fashion is like fresh air all the time, and you get addicted to that. On the flip side, the least interesting aspect is the cruelty with which people are sometimes treated. It’s a very competitive and often superficial world. That’s why I think it’s crucial to cultivate concerns and friendships outside of this sphere, as it helps gain perspective on what you truly want to surround yourself with.

Fashion constantly evolves and pushes boundaries. Have you ever been part of a fashion trend or photoshoot that initially felt out of your comfort zone but ended up loving?
Yes, my first campaign with Tom Ford and Terry Richardson was incredibly intense and amazing. It was Tom Ford’s first ad for his own brand, and he sought something unique. I knew I was in good hands, as both were extremely talented and trustworthy. I allowed myself to let go and embrace something bigger than myself, which resulted in an iconic shoot that everyone talked about—even though it was censored in many countries (laughs). However, there have been instances in my career where I regretted certain experiences due to a photographer misusing their power, which made me uncomfortable. I was in my early 20s and didn’t handle it well; now I would approach things differently. Ultimately, it’s important to step out of your comfort zone and explore new opportunities, but intuition always guides you on what’s right or wrong. Never let anyone pressure you into doing something you don’t want to do.

Your career allows you to wear a wide array of fashion styles. Is there a particular look or designer that makes you feel most ‘yourself’?
I grew up with Tom Ford, and there’s a part of me that was “built” by his side; I absorbed so much from him. I also love designers like Alexander McQueen, Karl Lagerfeld, Maximilian Davis for Ferragamo, Jonathan Anderson for Loewe, Kim Jones for Dior, Pierpaolo Piccioli, Daniel Lee, and Jacquemus. Each of them brings something unique that resonates with my personal style.

Navigating frequent travel and collaborating with large teams, often comprised of strangers, while having your personal space invaded is a significant aspect of your career. How do you manage to stay centered and maintain a sense of normalcy amidst such a demanding schedule?
I think that’s the hardest part. Therapy has helped me a lot, as has my family; they’ve grounded me and helped me stay connected to the world outside of fashion. Therapy has allowed me to have a healthier dialogue with myself, be honest, and re-educate myself. Education is essential for everything you do, and I find it very empowering.

In addition to modeling, you’ve also ventured into acting. How do you approach preparing for a role compared to preparing for a photoshoot?
These are two completely different jobs with entirely different preparations. I don’t really prepare for a photoshoot; I just do it. For a role, it takes months of preparation, understanding the character deeply and their circumstances. You need to create the character starting from zero. It’s intense but super fun. I’m currently shooting a comedy series for Netflix, which is completely out of my comfort zone, but I’m loving it. At the end of the year, I’ll also be involved in the third season of “El Inmortal” for Movistar Plus.

You’ve been involved in various campaigns to raise awareness about climate change. Could you tell us about some of the most impactful projects you’ve worked on?
I have done different things, like organizing garbage and plastic collection from beaches, leading expeditions to talk with the first climate refugees, attending UN conventions, and engaging in discussions with international experts. All of these experiences were to create my own understanding of the current situation of our planet, which is a pitiful and overwhelming reality. If I can inspire others to respect and love our planet, I would be extremely satisfied. My hope is to inspire others to cherish and preserve our planet, and if I can do that, I would be extremely gratified.

What inspired you to get involved in efforts to help children, and what has been your journey in this regard?
If we don’t protect the most vulnerable children, then who will? I was in Nepal after the great earthquake as an ambassador for Save the Children. It was a trip that changed my perspective and radically shifted my priorities in life. I witnessed things I will never forget, from the greatest love and resilience to the heartbreaking realities of mafias who kidnap children on their way to school for sexual exploitation in other countries. These experiences are profoundly impactful and change who you are forever.

Who are your inspirations, regardless of their profession or background?
I find inspiration in fulfilled elderly people. Life can be hard, and we all face difficulties. When you encounter older individuals who are content and at peace, it’s truly refreshing. I love the idea of spending my later years as a happy old man, filled with hope and excitement, and having trust in others, which can sometimes be challenging.

Looking ahead, what are some goals or projects you’re excited about pursuing, either in modeling, acting, or beyond?
Currently, my personal projects are my top priority. For the first time, I am putting myself first, and that feels incredibly exciting. I’m eager to explore new avenues and make meaningful contributions in my life and career.
